As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips. Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres. AdvertisementAs a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels, I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer. But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience. I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world.

He Looks in the Mirror: At 75, He’s Wondering if Biden and Trump Can Say the Same” (front page, April 10), about Dr. Bob Ross, who cares for the residents of Ortonville, Minn.:Like Dr. Bob, I’m an aging, but still active, physician. I fully agree that at 83 I wouldn’t be fit to lead this country. Some qualities are lost with age, some are gained with age, and some are just intrinsic irrespective of age. Seventy-five years ago this past week, Sam Snead won the Masters Tournament and became the first champion to receive one of Augusta National Golf Club’s green jackets. Since the start of the month, Lottie Woad has captured the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. More than 30 past Masters winners gathered for dinner to honor Jon Rahm, last year’s champion, and Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hit tee shots to start this year’s tournament. On Sunday, someone — perhaps someone new, perhaps someone already admitted to the locker room reserved for past champions — will win the 88th Masters. But this past week, all of the possibilities seemed to be on greater display than usual.

Renaissance Portraits That Played Hide and Seek
  + stars: | 2024-04-11 | by ( Karen Rosenberg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Met’s delightful show “Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance” illuminates a curious trend in 15th- and 16th-century painting: the slow reveal. The works on view, originally concealed in special cases and behind sliding or reversible panels, gamify the experience of looking at portraiture; they have to be moved, before they can move us. But we can peer at them from double-sided glass cases and watch animations of faces emerging from sliding panels. The covers are marvelous works in their own right, with elaborate emblems and allegories that are themselves a form of representation. The interactions between the different components can be quite playful, with a literary and theatrical flair.

For a company to unveil a decent new ballet is a strange and marvelous occurrence. To unveil two in one season? Quality choreography that celebrates classicism, that highlights musicality — that even pushes the form into new realms — isn’t the norm. But at New York City Ballet this season, two premieres were worthy of many more viewings — and in the case of Alexei Ratmansky’s harrowing “Solitude,” set to Mahler, endless ones. Inspired by a 2022 photo of a Ukrainian father kneeling before the body of his dead son, the ballet filled the stage with bodies expressing the tangible ache of grief and love.

Surrealism Is 100. The World’s Still Surreal.

It’s a fish in the shape of a piano, floating in a clear blue sky, seen through a keyhole. Surrealism, the art movement that gave us disembodied eyeballs, melting clocks and animals with mismatched parts, was born in 1924 when the French poet André Breton published a treatise decrying the vogue for realism and rationality. Breton argued instead for embracing the “omnipotence of dreams” and exploring the unconscious and all that was “marvelous” in life. “The mere word ‘freedom’ is the only one that still excites me,” Breton wrote in his “Surrealist Manifesto.”It was a literary idea that became an art movement and revolutionized nearly all forms of cultural production. It’s now commonplace to call pretty much any weird experience “surreal.”

Strong earnings, or rate cuts? Instead of worrying about weak earnings growth and persistently high interest rates, investors are now counting on the opposite. Markets should cut their expectations by half and prepare for mid-single-digit profit growth and three to four rate cuts, Doll said. As “Succession” cast members marched up to the Emmy stage on Monday night to grab their statues for the show’s final season, they used it as one last opportunity to say goodbye. Kieran Culkin, after kissing his co-star Brian Cox on the lips, gave a tearful speech while accepting the award for best actor in a drama. Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook, who each won acting awards as well, gave loving tributes to fellow cast members. And Jesse Armstrong, the creator of “Succession,” capped off the night by accepting the best drama award for the third and final time and noting: “We can now depart the stage.”It all punctuated an end-of-era feeling at the Emmy Awards on Monday night. The ceremony felt in many ways like a book end to the so-called Peak TV era itself.

Starting January 29, Prime Video will feature “limited” advertisements, Amazon said in its email. Prime Video is joining most other streaming services by inserting ads into its programming and raising prices on ad-free tiers. Hulu, in which Disney owns a majority stake, will also hike its monthly ad-free subscription $3 to $17.99. Consumer demand for streaming services has slowed dramatically since the pandemic, cutting into streamers’ revenue growth. Prime Video, which is home to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Citadel,” is included in the $139 yearly Prime subscription.

Travelers are looking to cruises in 2024 because they are still cheaper than land-based alternatives. With occupancy levels approaching pre-pandemic levels, operators plan to hike prices in coming months. "Overall the market is extremely strong, especially the top end of the market in terms of the most high-end luxury cruises," said Bob Levinstein, CEO of cruise marketplace Cruise Compete. Even as travelers have canceled or postponed planned vacations to the Middle East, cruise bookings will still hit record levels in 2024, said Truist Securities analyst Patrick Scholes. Prior to the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, industry-wide bookings for 2024 were about 25% higher than in 2019 for bookings in 2020.
